Measuring Furniture and your Home

Buying furniture online can be a challenge sometimes when you do not have an item right in front of you. However, with this article you now will have a tool to help you make a more informed decision. Here are some helpful hints that designers use and they can help you too.

Use your own furniture
This is an excellent way to compare what you are looking at online to what you have right now. Take the measurements of the item you are looking at and compare it to what you have. Is the sofa you have too deep? If so, measure the overall depth and seat depth and try to get something with a narrower depth.

Get out and Shop with this Sheet
Another great thing to do is go shopping at your local furniture stores or even department stores. Take your measurements and sit in something comparable. This same process can be done for dining chairs, chair heights and so on. This gives you a good idea of scale and proportion for the item you are looking at online.

Measure with Masking Tape
If you are in an empty space and do not have furniture. Take some masking tape and lay it out on your floor at the outermost measurements. This will help you get a visual of your space and see if you have enough room for walking space.

Use graph paper and templates
This is something we are working on for you, but you can also do it on your own. Using 1/4" = 12" you can draw out your space and see if the item fits. Keep around 24" for walking space minimum for smaller walking areas and 30"-36" for larger or higher traffic walking areas. We are working on a downloadable template sheet with cutouts of our most popular sizes, but for now it can easily be done with a pen and paper.

Again when it comes to space planning use your own home and furniture. Even if it not the same type of furniture it can work. Put a chair 24" from the wall and see if 24" is good enough for you to walk through. If not put it at 30" and so on.

By taking a little bit more time you can make a very educated buying decision online. Even when you buy at a local furniture store, there are no guarantees, but this information will put you leap years ahead of the average internet buyer in making a good buying decision.

Measuring for Delivery
Another important measurement to consider that some people unfortunately find out the hard way is to measure if the item fits into your home. We and many retailers are not responsible for measuring your home, so this is important to consider.

Standard front doors are 36" wide and interior doors are 30" wide. Doors are removable in most cases so keep this in mind. If you are buying a long sofa, extra deep sofa, sofa with high arms, or a large entertainment unit it is very important that you make sure it fits into your home

Here are some common types of areas that cause delivery problems

Entries with walls or hallways right in front of the door. In many cases items have to be turned to get into the door. Often times I have seen where there is nowhere to go when there is a wall where you would normally turn.

Long hallways - This causes problems again when you have to turn into a room. With a narrow hallway there is no room to navigate the turn on a large piece.

Low ceilings - This causes problems, especially on older stairways and doorways where you sometimes have to stand items up on the ends to navigate.

There are more, but these are the most common.

If an item cannot fit, do not get frustrated right away. Many items have removable parts such as legs or decorative trims that often times gives you that inch or two that you need.

We hope this helps and we hope that this information helps you become a loyal customer at MisoMod.com!

Dining - Important Measurements you should know.

Types of Dining Room Furniture
Dining Tables
Dining Tables come in all sorts of lengths and widths and can come in various shapes and sizes. The common denominator is the height, which is normally around 30"H. Some glass top tables can be as low as 27", however if you see a table that is lower than 30" High make sure that it does not have an "apron". The apron is the support that connects 4 legs, this normally is around 4" in height and takes away from your legroom. If you are a tall person this may be a consideration. On tables that are 27"-30" that do not have aprons, it is fine because your legroom would be the same as a 30" High table with an apron.

Dining Chairs
Dining Chairs come in various widths, however you should allow around 24" of space for each chair width. Larger width chairs are normally around 22" Wide. The standard chair seat height is 18", depending on the table you can give an inch or two. However, 18" is standard and should be followed to ensure that you have the best possible seating experience.

Bar Tables
Bar Tables are increasingly popular in todays homes. These tables can be used either standing or sitting. Bar Tables are generally 40" in height.

Bar Stools
Bar Stools are the type of stools that you need to sit at a 40" high surface (surfaces are sometimes higher). Whether it is a table or a bar surface, this stool will work. The seat height is 30" and this is standard in the industry, but sometimes can vary an inch or two.

If you happen to have a surface that is higher than 40", we still recommend a barstool. If that is not high enough you may have to make a custom stool. Just keep in mind stability the higher you go. Many stores offer "approval" service or a return policy. It may be a good idea to try a stool at this height to ensure that it will be sufficient.

Counter Tables
Counter Tables are also popular today. They are lower than bar tables, but higher than dining tables. Counter Tables are generally 36" in height.

Counter Stools
Counter Stools are what you would need to sit at a Counter Table or a Kitchen Counter. This stool is meant to sit at a height of 36". The standard seat height for a counter stool is 24".

Occasional Furniture - Measurements you should know

Types of Occasional Furniture

Coffee/Cocktail Tables
Coffee Tables should be around 18" in height to match the seat height of your sofas. In some cases this height can be lower or higher. A lower height is popular for many modern looks, while the higher heights give a more grand look or are good for large scale sofas or sectionals.

Console/Sofa Tables
These are generally placed behind a sofa or at an entrance or hallway. The lengths and widths of these can vary however they are generally around 30" in height. You may want to measure the back height of your existing sofa (or potential sofa) to make sure that the console does not come up higher than the back of the sofa. It should be at the same height or lower than the sofa.

End Tables
These vary in height anywhere from 18"-30" high. Use the lower heights for sofas with low or no arms, while the 30" high end tables are good for tuxedo sofas or sofas with high arms.

Occasional Furniture Measurement Codes
W = Overall outside Width - Normally the shorter of the top measurements
D = Overall Depth - Used for Console & Sofa Tables sometimes
L = Overall Length - Used for rectangular and oval tables
H = Overall Height - From floor to top of tables.

Home Office - Measurements you should know

Types of Office Furniture

Office furniture is very similar to dining furniture as far as size. Widths and lengths of furniture may vary, you should mostly be concerned with heights and we will discuss this below.

Desks
Are normally around 30" in height give or take a couple of inches. In some cases, people are working at higher heights such as drafting tables, however you would need a barstool or counterstool in such cases.

Desk Chairs
Are standard with 18" seat heights. Since everyone is different in heights, most of our desk chairs also come with adjustable hydrolic lifts so this height can be raised or lowered as you wish.

Office Furniture Measurement Codes

W = Overall outside Width - Normally the shorter of the top measurements
D = Overall Depth - From front to back of a desk or chair
L = Overall Length - Used for desk measurements. The longer of the top measurements.
H = Overall Height - From floor to top of tables or backs of chairs
Desk Chairs
SH = Seat Height - From floor to top of seat
SD = Seat Depth - From front of seat cushion to front of inside back. This is the space you have to sit on.
SW = Seat Width - From seat side to side.
AH = Arm Height - From floor to top of arm (armchairs only)

This information can vary according to items made by each manufacturer, your home, and various sizes of people. It is meant as a general tool of what is standard in the industry for furniture and spaceplanning. Some measurements are not set in concrete and can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and home to home. We are not responsible for other retailers measurements or your satisfaction of measurements as satisfaction can be a personal preference.
